Incompletely delivered so to be
simply stated, the fears upon which the "seven
deadly sins" are based are:
pride
(ego
and self-righteousness)
FEAR
OF LOSS of self-worth brings us to establish for
ourselves a contrived hierarchical position of
power over others that is recognized by self and
perhaps by community and world. We feel that this
position of power insulates us from potential
harm by placing others between that harm and
ourselves. The threat to loss of this brings us
to defend ourselves and our hierarchy in the name
of myriad things such as religion,
socio-political ideologies, and the like.
envy
(jealousy
of another or of another's holdings and/or good
fortune)
FEAR
OF LOSS of self-worth brings us to wish for
ourselves that which another holds when we feel
those holdings or good fortune places them in a
position of higher prestige as measured by the
hierarchical system with which we choose to
measure ourself.
gluttony
(over-indulgence)
FEAR
OF LACK drives us to over-indulge in those things
which mean comfort and safety to us.
lust
(greed)
FEAR
OF LACK brings us to lust for things and
positions which will insure our prestige and
popularily (love / admiration) as well as our
safety and comfort whether that which we lust for
is sex-based, resource-based, or prestige-based.
anger
(hateful,
harmful actions and thoughts)
FEAR
OF PAIN brings us to strike out at those
perceived to threaten our any position,
territory, prestige, safety, etc.
covetousness
(being
a miser, selfishness)
FEAR
OF LACK again.
sloth
(laziness)
FEAR
OF PAIN. Laziness is an interesting mingled chaos
of conflicting emotions that lead us to choose
stasis to movement. Having suffered failure to
succeed, we become recumbent.
