Geneticists tell us that life is
directed by the selfish aim to preserve and propagate the
individual's DNA. This is imbued in the procreative
function, yes. But is it that which dictates method of
living? No. If it were, one could never witness in Nature
naught but cruelty, one to any other, except as such
would fulfill benefit to the above precept. Yet this is
not the case. Within species and between species, one can
witness compassion, kindness, and the giving of nurture
between one and another. It is well documented should you
choose to do the research.
A rule cannot be a rule when exception is repeatedly
observed, documented fact.
So the geneticists answer to what motivates is not the
only answer.
But it is one answer to the human condition.
We fear our mortality.
We also fear lack and loss, pain and discomfort (which
are the same) -- lack and loss of those things which
bring us sustenance and comfortable living; pain and
discomfort brought by those things we cannot control or
foresee.
