Art Speaks for Itself

zentao trademarkWhen I look at someone’s artwork, it either grabs hold of me, speaks for itself, makes a definite impression upon my psyche, or it’s just another amongst millions.  I can find redeeming qualities in many works, but those which merit my true appreciation stick in my eye and mind.  Forever.

Recently, I remarked upon someone’s pastel.  The work was good, but it was good because of technique, not vision.  Compare that to work by another artist whose images instantly grabbed my notice, riveting my attention, then driving me to seek out more of his extraordinary creations.

I can see thousands of paintings, sculpts, drawings, and, quite honestly, they are just more of the same.  Then there are those which stand forward, demanding exploration, creating a desire to find more works by the same artist in hopes that each of his or her works will similarly enthrall.

Often, I am disappointed.  There are only one or two works worth attending in an artist’s portfolio.  But then there are those wonderful surprises where one sees consistent and inspired vision, even if the artist is just developing and has but a handful of completed works.  Very exciting.
